On 18 November 2025, the 'Research Data Day in North Rhine-Westphalia' took place under the motto 'FAIR Data - FAIR Play: Just a matter of line-up'. The annual event, organized by the state initiative for research data management - fdm.nrw and NRW universities, including Ruhr University Bochum RUB, attracted numerous researchers from across North Rhine-Westphalia.
The morning began with a panel discussion in which representatives of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) discussed opportunities for participation and the use of NFDI services. Insights were provided into the history of the NFDI and the consortia, as well as impressions of their work. Using the Mentimeter tool, the audience was able to ask questions that were passed on to the panel. One focus was on how to get students and young scientists interested in the topic of research data management. It was emphasized several times that best practices and success stories in dealing with research data are the best way to communicate the benefits of FAIR data.
In the afternoon, universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including RUB, offered a diverse program of workshops, lectures, and networking opportunities. Our Research Data Services team was actively involved and organized two highlights:
- Introduction in Research Data Management (RDM): This workshop covered the basics and best practices for handling research data. Participants gained valuable insights and practical tips for their daily work.
- Kick-off of the RDM network: With over 25 participants, the official Kick-off of the RDM network took place in the university library. The participants engaged in intensive discussions and defined initial priorities for future networking activities. We have provided information about the results of the network meeting in a separate report .
We would like to thank everyone involved and all participants for the lively discussions and constructive exchange!
